Cari Kleinman Essay Contest Entries Sought

Entries are now being accepted for the 19th Annual Cari Kleinman Memorial Essay Contest. This contest is open to all community fourth graders. Essays should be based upon the following information:

Tzedakah is a Hebrew word meaning “justice” or “righteousness.” When we as Jewish people give money, we often use the word charity meaning “love” or “fondness.” In this essay, write about what you know about Tzedakah and give examples of how you have given Tzedakah in your home, community or elsewhere.

Essays should be neatly written or typed on standard-sized paper. Entries should include a cover sheet with the name and phone number of the entrant. Please make sure that the name appears on the cover sheet only, and not on any other page. Each essay will be assigned a number, so that it may be judged anonymously.

Entries must be submitted by 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, to the office at Congregation Adath Jeshurun, 2401 Woodbourne Ave., Louisville, KY 40205, Attn: Deborah Slosberg.

Judging will be done by an impartial panel of three people. The winner will be awarded a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by the Cari E. Kleinman Memorial Fund. The awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 25, at the KATS Religious School assembly.

Cari Eilene Kleinman was a beloved fourth grader in the Louisville community who died in August 1990. This essay contest is held in her name in remembrance of her love for reading and her strong Jewish identity.
