Families Look Forward to Free Pizza in the Hut after Apple Pickin’ Fun

The weather was perfect on Sunday, September 5, for the third annual JCL Rosh Hashanah Apple Pickin’ and Honey Dippin’ event at Joe Huber’s Family Farm in Starlight, IN; and more family fun is planned for Sunday, September 26, when all are invited to enjoy free kosher Pizza in the Hut.

More than 75 people made the trip across the river where they enjoyed crafts, hayrides, fun and apple picking. The children made calendars for the New Year, then everyone took the short ride to the orchard, where they enjoyed picking all of the apples that they could carry. The event was a great opportunity for some family fun and to get lots of apples and honey for a sweet new year.

This year, the JCL collaborated with New Roots on a Jewish Community Centers Association (JCCA) initiative for the High Holidays called “An Apple a Day.” This program is designed to collect and distribute apples to the millions of low-income people living in U.S. food deserts – neighborhoods with little access to fresh, healthy and affordable nutritious foods.

New Roots is a non-profit organization that works to develop a just and sustainable food system in the Ohio River Valley Region. Many families that attended this event donated a portion of their apples to help with this important program.

The next JCL family event will be Pizza in the Hut at the JCC Sukkah on Sunday, September 26, from 5-7 p.m. This is a free event open to all members of the community.  There will be kosher pizza for all and craft projects so that everyone can help decorate the Sukkah.

Reservations for this event are required, so please call 459-0660 to register.  Please call David Siskin at 238-2708 with any questions or with ideas for future events.

The Apple Pickin’ was made possible by the Murrel and Tobie Marks Klein Jewish Holidays Fund; and Pizza in the Hut is supported by the David and Annette Simon Sagerman Special Events Fund.
