ARC Lifeguarding Classes to Begin March 1 at the JCC

The Jewish Community of Louisville is offering a series of American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes, March 1 through May 20 at the Jewish Community Center. If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard this summer, come to the JCC to help you land that perfect summer job.

Session One, March 1-24, and will meet each Monday and Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Session Two, April 12-May 5, and will meet each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. Session Three, May 10-May 20, will meet Monday-Thursday from 3:30-7:30 p.m.

The class will teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries.

Participants must be able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke. Starting in the water, participants must be able to swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

New lifeguards should attend all scheduled classes, those seeking recertification should attend the first three days, then will receive a schedule for remaining required classes. They must attend six of eight classes.

CPR for lifeguarding recertification will not be taught separately this spring; however, those participants requiring recertification should contact Nikki Dillon.

In conjunction with the ARC Lifeguarding, the JCC is looking to fill certified lifeguarding positions for their upcoming summer camp, May 23-October 1. If you are looking for a meaningful and rewarding job, a place to gain experience working with children and competitive pay, the JCC is the place for you this summer. Bonuses are available to those who work throughout the entire season.
