Apply Now for Summer Camp Scholarships

[by Phyllis Shaikun]

For many Jewish children, an overnight Jewish summer camping experience excites their imaginations as they discover Judaism. They learn to live Jewishly, grow close to their camp friends and together, they make personal connections last a lifetime.

However, Jewish summer camp is expensive, and not all families can afford the cost of sending their children to camp. Recognizing this, the families and friends of Laura Cohen and Miriam Fine as well as Kim and Stuart Frankenthal chose to put children first by creating special Jewish summer camp scholarships through the Jewish Community of Louisville’s Foundation for Planned Giving.

Specific information about each of the scholarships is available below. To apply for a scholarship, please contact Sara Klein Wagner at 618-5307 or swagner@jewishlouisville.org. Applications for each scholarship are also available online by clicking the links below.

All applications for the camp scholarships must be submitted together with a written letter of recommendation from a Jewish professional in the community.

Applications for scholarships for next summer are due by December 31.

Laura K. Cohen Camp Scholarship [Apply Today]

The late Laura K. Cohen thought summer camp was the best of the best. She so treasured her time spent at a Zionist youth camp as a child that when she passed away, her friends and family decided to memorialize her by creating the Laura K. Cohen Camp Scholarship to honor all she meant to them.

Applications for the partial-tuition camp scholarships will be accepted from youngsters interested in attending Jewish overnight summer camps that observe kosher dietary laws, are Zionistic in approach (provide an Israeli element in orientation and/or programming), and observe Shabbat.

Miriam R. Fine Beber Camp Memorial Scholarship [Apply Today]

Besides her family and friends, one of Miriam Fine’s favorites was summer camp. From being a camper at the JCC’s Ben F. Washer to being a counselor at Camp Livingston and at a camp in Atlanta, it simply was her thing. She thought camp was important for all kids and was adamant that her children go to camp too.

When Miriam passed away in 2004, her husband, Dennis, and their children, Molly, Max and Meredith, wanted to do something special to memorialize her. They decided that ensuring others the opportunity to enjoy the Jewish camping experience that had been so much a part of her life and theirs would be the best way to do it.

Since the Fine children had attended Camp Beber in Wisconsin over the years, they created an endowment to provide scholarships to the camp in Miriam Fine’s name. “We feel that no child should have to forego a Jewish camp experience for financial reasons,” said Dennis.

Frankenthal Family Camp Ramah Scholarship [Apply Today]

Citing their family’s desire to make a Jewish camping experience accessible for all youngsters in our community, Kim and Stuart Frankenthal recently endowed the Frankenthal Fund with the Foundation for Planned Giving. The Frankenthals had been Ramah campers and found it an “eye-opening experience” for themselves and for their children. “Jewish camping opportunities have always been important to our entire family,” said Kim. “In fact, they have been a priority in our family and extended family.”

The Frankenthal Fund provides need-based scholarships for youngsters from the Louisville area at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. “We hope kids in the area will take advantage of the scholarship and the opportunity to be a part of Camp Ramah,” says Kim. “If they have a love for Judaism and want to have some fun at the same time, there’s nothing like it.”
